Vikalp Online School reports 10,000 learning gaps among 6,045 students, with 95% showing improvement after targeted academic support.

India, October 9: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in education not just to automate routine tasks but also to help teachers understand how students learn. Data from Vikalp Online School, covering 6,045 students between April and September 2026, has identified more than 10,000 learning gaps that the school says have been addressed through additional academic support.
According to the school, students in secondary classes had an average of around 22 areas requiring further attention, compared with approximately 14 areas among primary school students. Following targeted interventions, 95% of students showed improvement, while the number of identified learning gaps declined by 49.6%, the school said.

The findings highlight a distinction between understanding a concept and applying it in practice. Vikalp reported that around 43% of students understood concepts but struggled to demonstrate their knowledge in written assignments. Another 23% performed better in written exercises despite not having developed a complete understanding of the underlying concepts.
These findings suggest that assessment results alone may not always provide a complete picture of a student’s learning progress. A correct answer does not necessarily indicate conceptual mastery, just as an incorrect response may not always reflect a lack of understanding.
Vikalp uses AI-assisted analysis to identify patterns across quizzes, assignments, projects and examinations. The system flags areas where students may require further attention, after which teachers review the findings and determine the appropriate intervention. Depending on the student’s needs, this could involve additional practice, alternative explanations or activity-based learning.
The school said the approach is designed to support teachers rather than replace their judgement, with technology helping identify potential difficulties and educators deciding how best to address them.
“AI in education should not be about replacing human judgement; it should be about strengthening it,” said Dinesh Gupta, Founder and CEO of Vikalp Online School.
According to Gupta, AI has helped reduce teachers’ assessment-related workload by around 30%. He added that teachers continue to shape or modify suggested interventions in most cases, ensuring that decisions about students’ learning remain informed by educators’ understanding of individual needs.
The findings underscore the importance of personalised learning approaches that recognise differences in students’ pace, understanding and ability to apply knowledge. By identifying learning difficulties earlier, AI-assisted assessment systems may help teachers provide more focused academic support.
However, the figures represent data reported by Vikalp Online School. The school’s findings do not, by themselves, establish that AI alone caused the reported improvements.
Vikalp India is an experiential online school offering flexible, activity-based learning pathways aligned with Indian curricula, including CBSE and NIOS. It serves students across metropolitan, Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India and also operates internationally in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Australia and Brazil.
The school focuses on concept-based, student-centred education aimed at developing deeper understanding and independent learning. More information is available at vikalpindia.com.
