Jharkhand plans medical college expansion, seeks NMC nod for 431 seats

Jharkhand has approached the National Medical Commission seeking approval to expand medical education capacity in state-run colleges, proposing the addition of 431 seats for the 2027-2028 academic session.

The proposal submitted by the state’s health, medical education, and family welfare department includes 220 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate seats, aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and addressing the shortage of trained professionals.

Ajoy Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary of the health department, said, “The increase in PG seats would ensure smoother functioning of medical education within the state.”

“This initiative would help address the shortage of specialist doctors and enable the people of Jharkhand to access better healthcare. Increase in the number of doctors will help provide timely and quality healthcare,” Singh added.

The move builds on recent seat expansions across institutions. In the 2026 to 2027 academic year, undergraduate seats at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur increased from 100 to 150, while postgraduate seats rose from 45 to 51.

At Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad, postgraduate seats were increased from 9 to 19.

Officials said the state now plans to add 50 undergraduate seats each in medical colleges at Dhanbad, Dumka, and Hazaribag, taking their total intake to 150 seats per institution.

An additional 70 undergraduate seats have been proposed for Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, which currently has 180 seats.

The expansion is part of a broader plan to significantly scale up medical education, with the state aiming to increase total undergraduate seats from 730 to 1500 over the next four years.

The proposal also includes the introduction of postgraduate courses at Phulo Jhano Medical College in Dumka and Medini Rai Medical College in Palamu with 21 seats each, while Sheikh Bihari Medical College in Hazaribag is expected to begin with 30 postgraduate seats in the 2027 to 2028 session.

In addition, the state plans to add 48 postgraduate seats at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, which currently has 51, and 21 seats at SNMMCH, which has 19.

Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences is expected to receive 70 more postgraduate seats, increasing its total to 246.
