Delhi-NCR braces for heavy rain, thunderstorms as monsoon intensifies

Delhi-NCR woke up to light to moderate rainfall on Saturday morning, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continued showers across the region over the next 24 hours.

The weather is expected to remain unsettled throughout the day, with generally cloudy skies and intermittent light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the national Capital and its adjoining areas.

The IMD has also warned of isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR on Saturday. Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad may experience intense spells of rain, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at some locations.

Residents have been advised to remain prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions. Heavy showers in isolated areas could lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions, particularly during peak hours. Commuters travelling through Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad may face delays due to rain-related congestion.

According to the latest weather forecast, Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds are also likely over parts of the region.

The weather alert for Delhi-NCR is part of a broader forecast covering several states across the country. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. Several northeastern states are also expected to witness significant rainfall activity.

Konkan and Goa, Gujarat and Rajasthan may receive heavy showers, while parts of southern India, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, are also likely to experience widespread rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds have been forecast for several of these regions, with active monsoon conditions expected to continue across the country until August 27.

Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality remained in the moderate category. Among the monitoring stations, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 166, while Jahangirpuri stood at 125. Dwarka-Sector 8 recorded 113, R.K. Puram 105, NSIT Dwarka 104 and CRRI Mathura Road 101. Several other locations, including Pusa, DTU, Burari Crossing and IGI Airport, reported satisfactory air quality levels.
