CM Vijay won’t promote son Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut Sigma

Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, has confirmed that his father will not be part of the promotional campaign for his directorial debut Sigma, saying he wants the film to stand on its own rather than be overshadowed by his father’s political stature.

Speaking at a press meet in Hyderabad on Wednesday ahead of the film’s October 2 release, Jason Sanjay said Vijay was eagerly awaiting the film but would not participate in its promotions.

“My father is waiting for the release of Sigma. He won’t be promoting my film. I want the promotions to be about the film and not him. I don’t want it to overlap,” Jason Sanjay said.

He also acknowledged that Vijay’s responsibilities have changed since he became Chief Minister. “And he’s become CM now, so he has so many responsibilities. He’s waiting to see what I’ve done and is very excited,” Jason Sanjay said.

Asked about his reaction to his father becoming Chief Minister, Jason Sanjay kept his response personal.

“I felt happy when my father became CM. It was a happy moment for everyone around him,” he said.

When asked what Vijay had given him for his first film, Jason Sanjay pointed towards the audience and Vijay’s fan base, suggesting that the goodwill and attention surrounding the project were themselves a significant gift from his father’s decades-long career as a star.

A career of his own

Jason Sanjay has previously spoken about growing up around film sets and how that early exposure shaped his interest in filmmaking.

In an earlier interview with Behindwoods, he recalled having access to sets from childhood and gradually becoming comfortable with the filmmaking environment.

“Since childhood, I had access to sets. That was my privilege. I had good exposure. I started to feel comfortable there. I normalised going to sets as part of my life. So, the interest sparked from there,” he said.

He has also spoken about Vijay’s encouragement to establish an identity of his own rather than simply depend on the family name.

For Jason Sanjay, Sigma marks his first major step behind the camera. While directing remains his immediate focus, he has not ruled out acting in the future. Asked whether he would consider appearing in films, he said he may explore acting after the release of Sigma.

He has also spoken warmly about his family, describing his mother Sangeetha as a “pillar” in his life and his sister Divya Saasha as one of his closest friends.

What to expect from Sigma

Sigma is an action-adventure heist comedy starring Sundeep Kishan in the lead, alongside Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan and Yog Japee.

The film has music by S Thaman, cinematography by Krishnan Vasant, editing by Praveen KL and VFX by Hariharasuthan. It is produced by Subaskaran under Lyca Productions.

The film was originally scheduled for release on July 31 but was postponed to avoid a clash with Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan.

With Vijay staying away from the promotional campaign, Sigma will now reach audiences primarily on the strength of Jason Sanjay’s work as a filmmaker — giving the young director an opportunity to establish his own voice beyond the considerable shadow of his father’s stardom.
