Covering 55 subjects across five broad areas, the rankings assess academic reputation, employability, and research impact, while helping students compare institutions based on discipline and global performance indicators.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 have been released, providing a comprehensive overview of global university performance across disciplines to help students compare institutions and plan their higher education choices.
This edition is the largest so far, covering 55 specialized subjects grouped into five broad academic areas. More than 1,900 universities have been ranked, including over 300 institutions appearing for the first time.

Across major subject areas, leading global universities retained their dominance. In Arts and Humanities, the University of Oxford ranked first, followed by Harvard University and the University of Cambridge.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped Engineering and Technology, with Stanford University and ETH Zurich in second and third place.
In Life Sciences and Medicine, Harvard University secured the top position, ahead of the University of Oxford and Johns Hopkins University. Harvard also led the Natural Sciences category, followed by MIT and Oxford.
In Social Sciences and Management, Harvard University ranked first, with Oxford and Stanford University completing the top three.
The rankings are based on five key indicators that assess both academic quality and employability outcomes. These include academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, H-index, and the International Research Network.
Academic reputation is derived from global surveys of scholars, identifying institutions recognized for excellence in specific fields. Employer reputation is based on feedback from recruiters regarding graduates’ job readiness.
Research impact is measured through citation data sourced from Elsevier’s Scopus database, while the H-index evaluates both the volume and influence of research output. The International Research Network indicator measures the extent of global research collaboration.
Regionally, Southern Asia recorded the highest share of institutions improving their rankings compared to last year, while East Asia accounted for the largest number of new entrants.
The subject rankings are intended to guide students exploring study options by allowing them to compare universities based on discipline, performance indicators, and geographic location.
While the rankings offer insights into academic standards and career outcomes, QS advises students to also consider factors such as course design, campus infrastructure, and tuition fees before making decisions.
Detailed university profiles, including program offerings and fee structures, are available on the official QS platform to support informed decision-making.
