IIIT Lucknow founding director Arun Mohan Sherry appointed IIM Shillong

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong has appointed Prof Arun Mohan Sherry as its new director for a five-year term. The appointment was made by the President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of the Indian Institutes of Management.

Sherry, the founding director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Lucknow, has led the institute since 2019 and will now take charge of one of India's leading management schools.

Speaking after his appointment, Sherry said integrating artificial intelligence into business education would be one of his top priorities.

“AI is a reality now. And since this is what we specialize in, we will give a new direction to business education,” he added.

He said the institute would also seek to capitalize on the growing interest among students in undergraduate business management programs.

“Special emphasis would be on globalization, as technology has made education sans borders a reality. So my effort would be on the use of technology in the area of higher education, especially business education,” he said.

Sherry also identified lifelong learning as a key focus area, citing the rapid pace of technological advancement.

“As technology is advancing, changing so fast that what one is learning today is outdated tomorrow.” “That’s why continuous education and learning are the key,” he said.

With more than 30 years of experience in academia, Sherry is widely recognized for establishing and developing IIIT Lucknow into a rapidly expanding institution with strengths in research, academic excellence, innovation, startup incubation, and industry partnerships.

Before taking charge of IIIT Lucknow, he served in senior leadership roles at NMIMS, IMT Ghaziabad, and HCL TalentCare.

An MSc gold medalist, Sherry earned his MTech in Computer Science from IIT Kharagpur before completing his PhD.

He has also authored several research papers in computer science, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation and has received multiple honors for his contributions to higher education and institutional development.
