The move aims to expand access and offer flexible learning options, allowing students to study languages online with easier access to course material and schedules.

Delhi University’s Executive Council has cleared a proposal to offer foreign language courses in online mode for students enrolled in the School of Open Learning.
The courses will be delivered through the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies and the Department of East Asia Studies. Languages under Germanic and Romance studies include French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and Italian, while East Asian studies will offer Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Russian will be offered through the Department of Slavonic and Finno Ugric Studies.

According to Payal Mago, director of the Campus of Open Learning and chairperson of its governing body, “The foreign language courses already exist. The EC has now approved introducing them in the online mode. We will try to introduce them for the academic session 2026-27 or by the next academic session.”
Classes will be conducted online, allowing students greater flexibility in accessing course material. Learners will be able to use the platform to view video lectures and complete assignments.
