Hundreds of passengers were stranded overnight at Mumbai Airport after multiple SpiceJet delays and cancellations, triggering anger at Terminal 1 and renewing concerns over airline operational reliability.

Chaos At Mumbai Airport T1 As Delays, Cancellations Of Flights To Delhi, UP & Bengaluru Spark Passenger Outrage
Mumbai witnessed scenes of confusion and frustration at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 1 after at least two to three SpiceJet flights were cancelled and several others delayed for hours, leaving passengers stranded through the night. The disruption affected domestic travellers heading to key cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
Passengers reported long waits, little communication from airline staff, uncertainty over rescheduling, and overcrowded boarding areas as delays stretched deep into the night and into Thursday morning. Videos circulating online showed tense scenes inside the terminal, with travellers demanding answers after plans collapsed at short notice.

According to multiple reports, some flyers had reached the airport late Wednesday night for scheduled departures but remained stuck until early morning after repeated delays led to cancellations. Several travellers were forced to search for last-minute tickets on other airlines or postpone urgent travel plans.
SpiceJet said the disruption was linked to operational reasons, including an aircraft grounding and adverse weather at an earlier station that affected aircraft rotation schedules. The airline also cited crew members reaching Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), which legally prevents staff from operating beyond permitted hours.
Industry observers note that when aircraft rotations break down, delays can quickly spread across multiple sectors, especially during busy late-night schedules where recovery options are limited.
As the night wore on, passenger tempers flared. Reports said some travellers raised slogans against the airline after waiting for hours without clear updates. Families with children, senior citizens and business travellers were among those affected.
Many passengers complained that assistance desks were overcrowded and alternatives were not communicated quickly enough. Some also said hotel or meal arrangements were unclear.
The latest SpiceJet episode comes only months after a major IndiGo operational crisis that caused widespread cancellations and delays across Indian airports, including Mumbai. During that earlier disruption, hundreds of flights were affected nationwide, with passengers reporting waits of several hours, missed connections, baggage delays and sudden cancellations.
At Mumbai too, earlier visuals had shown long queues and heavy crowding as travellers scrambled for rebookings. The repeated nature of airline disruptions has raised fresh questions over scheduling resilience, crew management and passenger communication standards in India’s fast-growing aviation market.
Mumbai is one of India’s busiest aviation hubs, and any disruption at Terminal 1 can have a cascading effect for thousands of domestic passengers. With summer travel demand rising, flyers are increasingly expecting real-time updates, faster compensation processing and better contingency planning from carriers.
For now, airport operations have gradually normalised, but the overnight chaos has once again highlighted the vulnerability of passengers when airline systems fail.
