A new campaign titled “My Vote Matters” has been launched to assist Indian students in the United Kingdom with registering for local elections, amid concerns that many eligible students remain unaware of their voting rights.
The initiative focuses on providing clear information about eligibility, documentation, and deadlines for voter registration, particularly targeting Indian students who qualify under Commonwealth citizenship provisions.

Under UK rules, certain foreign nationals, including Commonwealth citizens with valid residency status, are allowed to vote in local elections if they are registered on the electoral roll.
The campaign comes ahead of upcoming local elections, with authorities setting strict deadlines for registration. Eligible voters must ensure they are registered in advance, as failing to do so would prevent participation in the electoral process.
Organisers of the campaign said many students are either unaware of their eligibility or face confusion around the registration process. The initiative seeks to address these gaps by offering step-by-step guidance and outreach through universities and student networks.
Students in the UK can register online, a process that typically takes only a few minutes and requires basic personal details, including a National Insurance number where available.
The campaign also highlights that students may be eligible to register at both their home and university addresses, depending on their circumstances, although voting rules differ across elections.
The move reflects broader efforts in the UK to increase voter participation among young people and international residents, particularly in local elections where community-level decisions are made.
