Strategic partnership gains momentum with expanded military engagement and shared Indo-Pacific vision

India and Japan have further strengthened their defence cooperation amid evolving security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. The growing convergence of strategic interests between the two countries reflects a shared commitment to maintaining regional stability, maritime security, and a rules-based international order.
Key Highlights:
One of the major developments in the partnership is the expansion of joint military exercises between the Indian Armed Forces and Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. These exercises are aimed at improving interoperability, enhancing combat readiness, and fostering mutual trust between the two nations.

A key focus area of cooperation is maritime security, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region, which has witnessed increasing geopolitical competition. Both countries are working together to secure vital sea lanes and ensure freedom of navigation. Collaboration also extends to defence technology sharing, including advancements in surveillance systems, cybersecurity, and defence equipment.
The partnership is further strengthened under the framework of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), which includes India, Japan, the United States, and Australia. The QUAD aims to promote a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific while addressing emerging security challenges such as maritime threats, disaster response, and critical infrastructure protection.
Significance:
The deepening of India–Japan defence ties plays a crucial role in supporting the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific. By working together, both countries contribute to maintaining stability and ensuring that international waters remain accessible and secure for global trade.
This cooperation also serves as a counterbalance to rising security challenges in the region, including territorial disputes, militarization, and strategic competition. Strengthened defence ties enhance deterrence capabilities and promote a cooperative security framework.
Moreover, the partnership reflects a broader alignment of democratic values and shared strategic objectives. As India and Japan continue to expand their defence collaboration, their relationship is expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific region.
