Deepening defence, technology, and global cooperation under Special Global Strategic Partnership

India and France have further strengthened their bilateral ties by elevating their relationship to a Special Global Strategic Partnership. This development reflects the growing convergence of interests between the two countries in areas such as defence cooperation, technological collaboration, and global governance. The partnership highlights the commitment of both nations to work closely in addressing regional and global challenges, including security threats, climate change, and technological transformation.
One of the most important pillars of India–France relations is defence cooperation. France has emerged as one of India’s most reliable defence partners, supplying advanced military equipment and supporting India’s defence modernisation efforts. The two countries regularly conduct joint military exercises and collaborate on defence production and technology transfer. This cooperation enhances India’s military capabilities and strengthens its national security.

Technology collaboration is another key focus area. Both countries are working together in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, space technology, cybersecurity, and clean energy. France has supported India’s space ambitions through cooperation between the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Centre National d'Études Spatiales. These partnerships contribute to scientific advancement, innovation, and sustainable development.
The partnership also emphasizes coordination in global governance. India and France share similar views on promoting a multipolar world order, strengthening multilateral institutions, and ensuring strategic stability. France has consistently supported India’s bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, demonstrating strong diplomatic alignment.
The significance of this partnership lies in enhancing India’s strategic autonomy, allowing it to maintain independent foreign policy choices without overdependence on any single country. It also helps India balance global geopolitical pressures and reinforces its multi-alignment approach to foreign policy.
Overall, the strengthened India–France partnership represents a major step in advancing India’s global influence, defence capabilities, and technological progress, while contributing to regional and global stability.
