Advancing Maritime Security, Defence Collaboration, and Climate Action

India and France have further deepened their strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific by expanding cooperation in maritime security, defence production, and climate action. The development reflects converging interests of both countries in ensuring stability, freedom of navigation, and a rules-based international order in a region of growing geopolitical significance.
Maritime security forms a core pillar of the enhanced cooperation. India and France have agreed to strengthen information sharing, joint naval exercises, and coordination in maritime domain awareness across the Indian Ocean and the wider Indo-Pacific. France, with its overseas territories and military presence in the region, is a key resident power, making it a natural strategic partner for India’s Indo-Pacific vision.

In the defence domain, the two countries have reaffirmed their commitment to defence industrial cooperation and co-production. Building on existing collaborations in aerospace and naval platforms, the partnership aims to expand joint research, technology transfer, and manufacturing under initiatives such as Make in India. This supports India’s objective of enhancing indigenous defence capabilities while diversifying strategic partnerships.
Climate action and sustainable development have also emerged as important areas of cooperation. Both countries have reiterated their commitment to initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and collaboration on renewable energy, climate finance, and resilience-building in island and coastal states of the Indo-Pacific. This highlights a shared approach that links security with environmental sustainability.
The strengthened partnership aligns with broader minilateral and multilateral engagements in the region, complementing India’s cooperation with other like-minded partners. It reflects a balanced strategy that emphasises inclusivity, respect for international law, and strategic autonomy.
Significance
Deepening India–France cooperation enhances India’s strategic autonomy and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific. It reinforces a rules-based international order, promotes sustainable development, and strengthens India’s role as a key stabilising power in the region.
