Aligning Workforce Development with Sustainability Goals

The Government has integrated green skills training modules into the National Skill Development Mission under the broader Skill India Mission, aiming to prepare the workforce for emerging opportunities in the green economy. The initiative focuses on sectors such as solar energy installation, electric vehicle (EV) maintenance, energy-efficient construction, waste management, and sustainable infrastructure.
The new modules emphasize practical and industry-aligned training, equipping candidates with technical competencies required for renewable energy systems, battery management, charging infrastructure, and eco-friendly building practices. Training programs will be delivered through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), skill development centers, and partnerships with private sector firms.

A key objective is to create a pool of certified green professionals capable of supporting India’s transition toward low-carbon growth. The program also integrates entrepreneurship components, enabling trainees to establish micro-enterprises in areas like rooftop solar installation, EV servicing, and sustainable building solutions.
The integration of green skills aligns with national initiatives such as the National Solar Mission, National Electric Mobility Mission, and National Hydrogen Mission. By linking employment generation with climate action, the government aims to ensure that economic growth remains environmentally sustainable.
Special focus is being placed on youth, women, and rural communities, enhancing inclusive participation in the green economy. Certification standards and industry collaboration will ensure quality training and employability.
Significance
The integration of green skills under the National Skill Development Mission promotes green job creation and supports sustainable economic growth. By aligning skill development with environmental priorities, the initiative strengthens workforce readiness for India’s energy transition and climate commitments.
