Scaling Green Hydrogen Production for Industrial Decarbonization

The Government of India has launched Phase II of the National Hydrogen Mission, aiming to accelerate the production, storage, and distribution of green hydrogen at a commercial scale. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources through electrolysis, is central to reducing carbon emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, refining, and chemical industries.
Phase II focuses on scaling up production capacities, establishing storage and transportation infrastructure, and promoting domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and other related technologies. By creating a robust green hydrogen ecosystem, the mission aims to make India self-reliant in this emerging fuel while attracting private investment and fostering innovation in clean energy technologies.

The mission also encourages public–private partnerships and international collaboration to adopt best practices, enhance efficiency, and reduce costs of hydrogen production. It aligns with renewable energy expansion, EV adoption, and sustainable industrial practices under India’s broader energy transition strategy. Pilot projects, regional hydrogen hubs, and integration with existing renewable energy infrastructure are expected to demonstrate feasibility and commercial viability.
Phase II also seeks to support the development of green hydrogen derivatives, such as ammonia and methanol, which can be used domestically and for exports, strengthening India’s position in global energy markets. Emphasis on standards, safety regulations, and supply chain efficiency ensures sustainable growth and environmental compliance.
Significance
The launch of Phase II strengthens India’s commitment to Net Zero targets, supports industrial decarbonization, and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. By scaling green hydrogen production and building associated infrastructure, the mission advances energy security, fosters clean technology innovation, and positions India as a global leader in the hydrogen economy.
