Push under National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to boost clean energy and reduce fossil fuel dependence

India has accelerated efforts to expand green hydrogen initiatives as part of its commitment to clean energy transition and climate goals. The push comes under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position India as a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen.
Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, is being promoted as a clean alternative to fossil fuels. Unlike conventional fuels, it produces minimal carbon emissions, making it a key component in efforts to decarbonise sectors like industry, transport, and energy.

The government is focusing on the development of infrastructure and production capacity to scale up green hydrogen adoption. This includes setting up hydrogen production plants, developing storage and transportation systems, and encouraging innovation in electrolyser technology. Policy support and financial incentives are also being extended to attract private investment and accelerate the growth of this emerging sector.
The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, aligning with India’s commitments under global climate frameworks. It also supports the transition towards a low-carbon economy by integrating renewable energy into industrial processes and energy systems.
Another major significance of the initiative is enhancing energy independence. As India currently relies heavily on imported fossil fuels, the development of domestic green hydrogen capacity can reduce dependence on external energy sources. This not only strengthens energy security but also shields the economy from global fuel price volatility.
Experts believe that with sustained policy support and technological advancement, India has the potential to become a leader in the global green hydrogen market. The initiative also opens up opportunities for job creation, innovation, and export growth in the clean energy sector.
Overall, the expansion of green hydrogen initiatives marks a significant step towards sustainable development. It reflects India’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility while building a resilient and future-ready energy ecosystem.
