Tehran reinforces its key oil export hub with mines and air defences as Washington weighs further military action, fuelling concerns over escalation and renewed volatility in global oil markets.

Iran has significantly strengthened its military presence on Kharg Island, its most critical oil export hub, amid growing concerns of a potential United States operation targeting the strategic location.
According to reports, Tehran has deployed additional troops, installed advanced air defence systems, and laid defensive mines around the island in preparation for a possible attack.

The move comes as the US ramps up its military posture in the Middle East, with discussions reportedly underway in Washington about the possibility of seizing or neutralising Kharg Island.
Kharg Island holds immense strategic and economic importance for Iran. Located in the Persian Gulf, it handles the majority of the country’s crude oil exports and houses extensive storage and loading infrastructure. Any disruption to operations on the island could severely impact Iran’s economy and global energy supply chains.
The island has already been targeted earlier in the conflict. In mid-March, US forces carried out large-scale airstrikes on military installations on Kharg Island, reportedly hitting dozens of targets while avoiding oil infrastructure. The strikes marked a significant escalation in hostilities and highlighted the island’s central role in the conflict.
In response, Iran appears to be adopting a layered defence strategy, aimed at deterring or slowing any potential ground or amphibious assault. Reports suggest that the deployment of mines and portable air defence systems is intended to make any military operation against the island costly and complex.
The developments have also intensified concerns in global energy markets. Kharg Island is a vital node in international oil supply, and heightened military activity around it has already contributed to rising oil prices. Crude prices have surged amid fears of prolonged disruption, with analysts warning that any direct strike on oil infrastructure could trigger a sharp spike.
Beyond economic implications, the situation underscores the risk of a broader regional conflict. Iran has warned that any further aggression could lead to retaliation across other strategic waterways and regions, potentially expanding the scope of the war.
With tensions continuing to escalate and both sides adopting increasingly assertive postures, Kharg Island has emerged as a focal point in the conflict. Any military action involving the island is likely to have far-reaching consequences, not only for the region but also for global energy stability and international security.
