Opposition leaders criticised the government for allowing only a ministerial statement on the escalating West Asia conflict, saying Parliament must hold a full discussion so MPs can question the government about India’s diplomatic and security response.

The Opposition on March 9 demanded a full-fledged discussion in Parliament on the escalating conflict in West Asia, criticising the government for limiting the matter to a ministerial statement by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
Several opposition leaders said Parliament should debate the issue to allow lawmakers to ask questions and seek clarifications about India’s diplomatic stance and the safety of Indian citizens in the region.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh argued that a statement by the minister alone was insufficient and said MPs should be given the opportunity to raise questions on a crisis that could have significant geopolitical and economic implications for India.
During the proceedings, opposition MPs staged protests and raised slogans in the Lok Sabha, demanding that normal business be suspended so the House could hold an urgent discussion on the West Asia situation. The disruptions led to repeated adjournments of the House.
Opposition leaders said the government must demonstrate “leadership, not cowardice” and address concerns about the ongoing conflict, particularly its potential impact on India’s energy security and the large number of Indian nationals living in Gulf countries.
Responding to the situation, Jaishankar briefed Parliament on the developments in the region and reiterated that India is closely monitoring the conflict. He emphasised that India’s primary concern is the safety and security of its citizens and the stability of global energy supplies.
The minister also said India supports efforts to reduce tensions through dialogue and diplomacy while maintaining communication with key regional partners.
The West Asia crisis has emerged as a major political flashpoint in Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session, with the Opposition pressing for greater transparency from the government on foreign policy decisions and contingency plans related to the conflict.
