No shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG, India’s energy supply secure for months, says Govt

The central government has asserted that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country, stating that India’s energy supply remains secure for the coming months despite ongoing disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said that fuel supplies across the country are stable and under control, urging citizens not to panic or engage in unnecessary stockpiling. The government described reports of shortages as part of a “deliberate misinformation campaign” aimed at triggering panic buying.

According to the ministry, India currently has around 60 days of crude oil and fuel stock cover, including strategic reserves and refined products. This stock level, combined with ongoing procurement, is expected to ensure uninterrupted supply for the foreseeable future.

Officials also confirmed that all petrol pumps are adequately stocked and operating normally, with no rationing of petrol or diesel being implemented anywhere in the country. State-run oil marketing companies have echoed this assurance, stating that supply chains remain stable.

On LPG availability, the government said that approximately 800,000 tonnes of LPG cargoes have already been secured, ensuring at least one month of firm supply. Additional procurement is underway to maintain continuity beyond that period.

The reassurance comes amid growing concerns following disruptions in global energy supply routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a key channel for oil and gas shipments. The ongoing conflict in the region has impacted a significant portion of India’s crude imports, but officials said alternative sources have been arranged to offset the shortfall.

To further stabilise supply, Indian refineries are operating at over full capacity, ensuring consistent production of petrol, diesel and LPG. The government added that crude oil supplies for the next two months have already been tied up by domestic companies.

The ministry also addressed reports of long queues and panic buying in some areas, attributing them to misinformation rather than actual supply constraints. Citizens have been advised to avoid hoarding and rely on official updates.

India, one of the world’s largest refiners and exporters of petroleum products, has diversified its sourcing strategy, securing supplies from multiple global partners to reduce dependence on any single region.

The government emphasised that the country’s energy ecosystem remains resilient, with sufficient reserves, robust refining capacity, and diversified import channels in place to handle ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

With tensions in West Asia continuing, authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation but reiterated that there is no immediate risk of fuel shortage in India.
