The incident triggered overnight protests by the students who were pacified after hectic efforts by the administration and police.

The accused was arrested a few hours after the victim filed a police complaint expressing concerns over women’s safety. An official apologized for the incident, according to media reports.
"We are ascertaining how a male worker was allowed inside the women’s hostel where one of the cameras was not working," Varun Kumar, Tiruchirappalli Superintendent of Police told reporters.
“Women police interacted with the female students to ascertain if there had been similar instances in the past,” the SP added.
