Indian Railways has launched a major upgrade programme for its Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains, with around 100 services set to undergo a comprehensive overhaul aimed at improving passenger experience.
The Railway Board has directed all zonal railways to carry out detailed inspections of train rakes, identify deficiencies and implement time-bound action plans to address gaps in comfort, cleanliness and onboard facilities.

The revamp will include new and improved seating with better upholstery, addition of charging points, upgraded snack tables and enhanced passenger amenities. Toilets across coaches will be modernised with improved fittings, drainage systems and hygiene standards.
Railways is also focusing on improving ride quality by reducing jerks in coaches, alongside upgrades to interiors such as flooring, lighting, panels and vestibule areas.
Enhanced digital passenger information systems and CCTV-based surveillance are also part of the plan to improve communication and safety.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at bringing these legacy premium trains in line with evolving passenger expectations, especially as newer services like Vande Bharat trains set higher benchmarks for comfort and modern amenities.
The upgrade programme is expected to benefit lakhs of passengers who rely on these trains for intercity travel, with zonal railways tasked with executing and monitoring the improvements across routes.
The move is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to modernise its existing fleet while continuing to expand its network of next-generation trains.
