Centre warns of LPG supply curbs for households refusing PNG switch where available

The government has indicated that households in areas with piped natural gas access may face restrictions on LPG supply if they do not transition, as India pushes to ease pressure on cylinder demand amid global fuel disruptions.

Centre warns of LPG supply curbs for households refusing PNG switch where available

The Centre has signalled that domestic LPG supply could be restricted for households that refuse to switch to piped natural gas (PNG) in areas where pipeline connectivity is already available, according to recent policy directions amid ongoing fuel supply concerns.

The move is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders and prioritise distribution efficiency during a period of global energy uncertainty. Officials have emphasised that where PNG infrastructure exists, consumers are expected to transition, failing which access to LPG refills may be curtailed.

The policy follows amendments to existing LPG supply rules that bar households with PNG connections from retaining or refilling LPG cylinders. Consumers with access to piped gas are being asked to surrender their LPG connections to streamline allocation and ensure availability for households without pipeline access.

The government’s push comes amid concerns over LPG supply stability, driven by global disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict and logistical constraints in fuel imports. India imports a significant portion of its LPG requirements, making it vulnerable to international supply shocks.

Officials have maintained that the transition to PNG will provide a more reliable and continuous fuel supply to households while easing pressure on cylinder distribution networks. The Centre has also been accelerating the expansion of city gas infrastructure and streamlining approvals to facilitate quicker adoption of piped gas systems.

At the same time, the government has urged consumers to avoid panic booking of LPG cylinders and instead opt for PNG where feasible. Data indicates that millions of households already have access to nearby PNG pipelines, making the transition relatively easier in urban and semi-urban areas.
