The death toll in the Bargi Dam boat tragedy in Madhya Pradesh has risen to 13 after rescue teams recovered the bodies of the last missing passengers, bringing closure to search operations days after the accident.
The incident occurred at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur district when a tourist cruise boat capsized during adverse weather conditions. The vessel, carrying several passengers, overturned amid strong winds and rough waters on April 30 evening.

Initial reports had indicated a lower toll, but as search operations progressed, more bodies were recovered from the reservoir, steadily increasing the number of fatalities. Authorities confirmed that among the deceased were women and children.
Several passengers were rescued in the immediate aftermath, but multiple people had gone missing, prompting an intensive multi-day search operation involving local authorities and rescue teams.
Preliminary accounts from survivors and officials suggest that the boat may have set sail despite warnings of strong winds. Some reports have also raised concerns over safety preparedness, including allegations that life jackets were either not provided on time or not used properly.
The tragedy has triggered widespread outrage and scrutiny of safety norms governing tourist boat operations in the state. Questions have been raised about whether standard protocols were followed before allowing the vessel to operate under risky weather conditions.
Following the incident, authorities have taken action against staff linked to the cruise operations, and an inquiry has been initiated to determine accountability. The state government has also moved to tighten oversight of such recreational activities to prevent similar incidents.
The Bargi Dam, built on the Narmada River and located near Jabalpur, is a major tourist attraction in the region and frequently hosts boating and cruise activities.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on establishing the sequence of events that led to the disaster and identifying lapses, if any, in safety compliance.
