UK eases Erasmus+ immigration rules from Oct 8, what it means for Indian students

The United Kingdom is set to ease immigration requirements for participants in Erasmus+ mobility programmes from Oct 8, allowing eligible visitors to undertake a wider range of short-term academic and training activities without sponsorship.

The changes come ahead of the UK’s planned return to the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme in 2027 and are aimed at facilitating mobility between the UK and participating countries.

What changes from Oct 8?

Under the revised Visitor route, eligible Erasmus+ participants will be able to undertake activities including study, courses, training, traineeships and job shadowing at UK-based organisations and educational institutions.

Participants will also be permitted to take part in workshops, debates and skills competitions. Erasmus+ participants can undertake traineeships of up to 30 days under the Visitor route, while state-funded schools and academies will be able to host eligible participants for short-term study placements of up to six months.

The UK government said the changes are intended to allow educational institutions and organisations to host Erasmus+ participants without the sponsorship requirements associated with some other immigration routes.

However, participants will still have to meet the relevant requirements of the UK Visitor route and any additional Erasmus+ eligibility conditions.

Changes also made to Student route

The immigration changes extend beyond the Visitor route.

The UK is amending its Student and Child Student routes to accommodate students participating in Erasmus+ programmes. Under the revised rules, Erasmus+ students will be able to undertake eligible study activities that would otherwise fall outside existing requirements.

One change removes the usual requirement for an Erasmus+ course to lead to an approved qualification. The government said this is necessary because Erasmus+ programmes do not always result in an approved UK qualification.

A separate Government Authorised Exchange route will also be opened for eligible Erasmus+ placements, allowing participants to undertake certain work placements and internships connected to the programme.

What does this mean for Indian students?

The changes could make it easier for Indian students who participate in eligible Erasmus+ mobility programmes to undertake short-term academic exchanges, training or other permitted activities in the UK.

However, the policy does not amount to a general relaxation of UK student-visa requirements for Indian students. The simplified provisions apply to people participating in eligible Erasmus+ activities and do not replace the normal immigration requirements for students travelling to the UK for regular degree programmes.

For ordinary short-term study outside the Erasmus+ framework, the existing Visitor rules continue to apply. The UK government currently allows Standard Visitors to study at an accredited institution for up to six months, subject to the applicable requirements.

UK preparing to rejoin Erasmus+

The immigration changes are part of preparations for the UK’s return to Erasmus+, the European Union’s programme covering education, training, youth and sport activities.

The UK government has said the new rules will facilitate participation in the programme by allowing a wider range of Erasmus+ activities to take place under appropriate immigration routes. The changes are being introduced in stages, with the first set taking effect on Oct 8, followed by further changes later in 2026.
