Australia suspends management course for international students amid visa integrity concerns

Australia is tightening scrutiny of vocational education programs after suspending new international student enrollments in a management course that officials said had been associated with visa concerns and low completion rates.

The restriction will apply to the Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning), or BSB80120, from Oct 5, 2026. Providers will be barred from accepting new overseas students into the course after that date.

Students already pursuing the qualification will not be required to discontinue their studies. They will be permitted to finish the course with their existing education provider.

The decision was announced Sept 4 by Julian Hill, Australia's Assistant Minister for International Education.

The Department of Education described the action as the first instance of the federal government exercising newly granted powers to suspend or cancel the registration of an individual course for international students.

Officials said the government had found substantial evidence indicating that the course was being used by some non-genuine students as a pathway to facilitate transfers after they had already entered Australia.

The course has also recorded elevated visa refusal rates, while concerns have been raised over students failing to complete their studies, according to the government.

The BSB80120 qualification is currently available to international students through 452 registered VET providers across Australia.

Government figures show 41,033 active confirmations of enrollment linked to the course, including 15,772 students who are currently studying it.

The government emphasized that the suspension targets the individual course rather than Australia's international education sector as a whole.

It said the measure is intended to maintain the integrity of the student visa system and ensure international education programs meet appropriate quality standards.
