NMC announces end of PG diploma admissions in major medical education reform

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has set a timeline for the discontinuation of postgraduate diploma medical courses, with admissions to these programs ending after the 2026-27 academic session.

In a recent notification, the medical education regulator stated that no fresh admissions will be allowed to PG diploma courses from the 2027-28 academic year onward.

The move is expected to gradually shift specialist medical training in India entirely toward MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery) degree programs.

PG diploma courses have long served as an alternative pathway for doctors seeking specialization in disciplines such as anesthesiology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, and other fields.

Typically shorter than MD and MS programs, these courses have played a role in meeting specialist workforce requirements, particularly in smaller healthcare facilities.

According to the commission, the transition is intended to create a more uniform postgraduate medical education framework by making MD and MS degrees the primary qualifications for specialist practice.

The NMC noted that many medical colleges already have the infrastructure, faculty, patient load, and clinical resources needed to run degree programs.

Consequently, institutions offering diploma courses will be allowed to convert their existing diploma seats into corresponding MD or MS seats.

The conversion process will be overseen by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), which functions under the NMC.

Medical colleges seeking conversion will be required to submit applications through an online system. Detailed schedules and application procedures are expected to be announced separately.

The decision aligns with provisions introduced under the Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER), 2023.

Those regulations had already enabled colleges to convert diploma seats into degree seats, while also restricting the introduction of new diploma courses and preventing seat expansions in existing diploma programs.

With the latest notification, the regulator has now established a definitive deadline for ending admissions to diploma-based specialist training programs.

The phase-out is expected to standardize postgraduate medical qualifications across institutions by reducing variations in specialist training pathways.

Medical colleges that currently depend on diploma programs will need to reorganize academic structures, faculty deployment, and training arrangements to accommodate degree-based courses.

The transition may also require careful planning to ensure that the availability of specialist training opportunities is not disrupted, particularly in regions where diploma programs have traditionally contributed to the healthcare workforce.

As the final round of admissions approaches in 2026-27, medical institutions across the country are expected to begin preparations for the shift toward a fully degree-based postgraduate medical education system.
