Heavy rain alert shuts schools across 28 UP districts, Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh

Schools and Anganwadi centres have been ordered closed in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district and 28 districts of Uttar Pradesh on September 26 as authorities respond to warnings of heavy rainfall and deteriorating weather conditions.

The closure orders vary across districts, with some administrations suspending classes up to Class 8 and others shutting schools up to Class 12. Several orders cover government, aided and private schools across different boards, while teachers and staff have been asked to report to schools in some districts.

In Pithoragarh, District Magistrate Ashish Bhatgai announced a one-day holiday for all government and private schools from Classes 1 to 12, along with Anganwadi centres, as a precautionary measure.

The administration has urged parents not to send children outside unnecessarily and asked residents to remain in safe locations while the heavy rainfall warning remains in place.

In Pithoragarh, the administration has also issued safety advisories as heavy rain raises concerns over water levels and landslides.

Residents have been asked to stay away from rivers, streams and ravines, particularly if water levels begin to rise. People travelling on hilly routes have been advised to exercise caution in areas vulnerable to falling rocks and landslides.

The District Magistrate has asked residents to immediately report emergencies to the concerned Tehsil administration or the District Disaster Management Authority.

The administration has also urged people to rely only on official sources for weather and disaster-related information and follow safety instructions issued by authorities.
