Haryana to introduce yoga education from Class 6, expand curriculum across schools

Haryana will introduce yoga education across a wider range of school grades and incorporate the subject into state recruitment examinations as part of a broader initiative to promote health and wellness among students and young professionals.

The state government announced that yoga will be added to the curriculum for Class 6 students during the 2026-27 academic session. From the following academic year, the subject will be expanded to cover all classes from Class 3 through Class 9.

The announcement was made during International Day of Yoga celebrations on Sunday and is aimed at encouraging holistic development and greater participation in structured yoga education from an early age.

To support the rollout, the government plans to provide specialized yoga training to Physical Training Instructors (PTIs), Diploma in Physical Education (DPED) teachers, Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs), and selected Primary Teachers (PRTs). The training will focus on yoga asanas and classroom instruction.

In another key decision, the Haryana government said questions related to yoga will become mandatory in all examinations conducted by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) and the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC).

The state also plans to establish a naturopathy and yoga institute in Morni to promote research, training, and wellness-oriented education. Additionally, yoga will be incorporated into the five Centres of Excellence being developed in universities across Haryana.

Speaking at an International Yoga Day event held at the dham of Baba Bhuman Shah in Sirsa district, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini highlighted the significance of yoga in daily life.

“Yoga is not merely a physical practice, it is a complete way of life that connects the body, mind, soul and society,” he said.

Saini also said yoga has gained international recognition under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Referring to the United Nations' decision to observe International Yoga Day on June 21, he noted that the proposal received support from 177 countries in 2014.

The measures are part of the state's efforts to strengthen yoga education and integrate wellness-focused learning into both academic and professional pathways.
