DUSU election 2026: ABVP sweeps key college posts as counting begins

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has registered a strong presence in Delhi University’s college-level student union elections, winning all four key posts at five colleges and securing several top positions at other campuses. The counting for the university-wide DUSU elections began on Saturday amid tight security.

Results emerging from the college-level elections showed ABVP candidates winning all four key posts — president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary — at Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Sri Aurobindo College (Morning), Dr BR Ambedkar College, Bharati College and Shivaji College.

The organisation also secured the posts of president, vice-president and secretary at Keshav Mahavidyalaya, while at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College, ABVP candidates won the president and central councillor posts.

At Ramjas College, ABVP candidates emerged victorious in the posts of president, secretary, central councillor and Internal Complaints Committee.

The college-level results provide an early indication of the organisational strength of the major student groups across individual campuses, although they are separate from the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election, which determines the four central university-wide posts.

The university-wide DUSU counting began at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus. The four central posts being contested are president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary.

The DUSU contest has brought major student organisations into direct competition, including the RSS-affiliated ABVP, the Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the AISA-SFI Left alliance.

While ABVP has already secured multiple college-level victories, the DUSU results will determine the composition of the university’s central student body leadership for the coming term.

The counting process is taking place under extensive security arrangements, with more than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed across the university and at other sensitive locations.

Police have stationed personnel at strategic points, with foot patrols, motorcycle teams and PCR vans maintaining a visible presence across the campuses. Paramilitary personnel have also been deployed at key locations as part of the multi-layered security arrangements.

Security has been tightened around the counting centre to regulate the movement of students and supporters, prevent overcrowding and check unauthorised gatherings as the results are announced.

Police teams are also monitoring sensitive and vulnerable points, particularly areas expected to witness a heavy movement of students and supporters during the counting process.

Vehicular movement on key stretches, including Chhatra Marg, Probyn Road and University Road, has been restricted and the curbs are scheduled to remain in place until the declaration of results.

Police are coordinating with university authorities and college administrations over entry and exit points, student movement and other logistical arrangements linked to the counting process.

The security deployment comes against the backdrop of a closely contested student political landscape at Delhi University, where elections routinely draw large numbers of students and supporters and can generate heightened activity around counting centres and campuses.

In the 2025 DUSU elections, ABVP won three of the four central panel posts, including the president’s post, while NSUI secured the vice-president’s position.

This year, the college-level results have already put ABVP in a prominent position across several campuses. However, the final picture of the university-wide contest will emerge only after counting of the four DUSU central posts is completed.

SFI has also registered victories in the college-level elections, winning the joint secretary post at Zakir Husain College and the president’s post at Bhaskaracharya College, according to the results reported so far.

The emerging college-level results, coupled with the closely watched DUSU counting, have placed student leadership and campus politics at the centre of attention across Delhi University as students await the final outcome.
