JNU dismissed the Congress MP from his teaching position after an internal inquiry involving 10 to 12 students, citing alleged misconduct and inappropriate interactions.

Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment involving students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he previously served as a professor.
The FIR was registered on Oct 11 at Vasant Kunj North police station on a complaint filed by JNU Chief Security Officer. The case includes charges related to sexual harassment, making sexually colored remarks, and words, gestures, or acts intended to insult a woman's modesty. Police officials said the investigation is underway.

The police action comes days after JNU dismissed Akoijam from his position as a professor at the School of Social Sciences following an inquiry by the university's Internal Committee into allegations of sexual harassment. Akoijam is the Congress MP representing Inner Manipur in the Lok Sabha.
According to officials, around 10 to 12 students from the Centre for Studies of Social Systems had submitted complaints alleging sexual harassment against the former professor. The FIR names Akoijam in connection with the allegations, which are now being investigated by the police.
The complaint was filed after JNU's Chief Security Officer sent a communication to the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj North police station on Oct 11.
The official forwarded documents submitted by the university's Internal Committee and requested that legal action be initiated based on the findings and material provided.
The police registered the FIR based on the complaint and the documents forwarded by the university. The registration of the case marks a separate stage of legal proceedings following the university's internal inquiry and its decision to dismiss Akoijam.
What the JNU Internal Committee report says
According to the FIR, JNU's Internal Committee examined the allegations by reviewing statements from the complainants, witness accounts, statements from defense witnesses, and other material available on record.
The committee's assessment, as cited in the communication sent by the university's Chief Security Officer to the police, indicated that the allegations should not be viewed as isolated incidents.
Instead, the report described what it considered a recurring pattern of conduct involving personal interactions, sexually suggestive behavior, and alleged unwanted physical contact.
The communication stated that the committee did not consider the above incident in 'isolation,' but ‘a recurring pattern of inappropriate personal interaction, sexually suggestive conduct, and unwelcome physical contact.’
The assessment also referred to what it described as an “intimidating and hostile learning environment” and “inadequate professional boundaries in interactions with female students.”
The findings were part of the material forwarded to the police by the university official, who requested legal action in connection with the allegations. The FIR records the police case based on the complaint and documents submitted by JNU, while the investigation into the allegations remains underway.
According to the FIR, the alleged incidents took place between July 2025 and May 2026 at the Centre for Studies of Social Systems, the School of Social Sciences at JNU, and other locations.
The university's internal proceedings culminated in Akoijam's dismissal from his teaching position last Friday, following the committee's inquiry. The police case has now been registered separately to investigate whether the alleged conduct constitutes criminal offenses under the applicable law.
Political controversy surrounding the case
The case has also triggered a political controversy, with the BJP Mahila Morcha organizing a protest against Akoijam in Delhi. The development comes as the allegations against the Congress MP have drawn attention both to the university's internal disciplinary process and to the police investigation.
Akoijam, a former JNU professor and sitting Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur, was dismissed from his university position after the Internal Committee examined the complaints. The police will investigate the allegations recorded in the FIR and the supporting documents submitted by the university.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against Akoijam have not been established through a criminal court judgment.
