Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission deepens

The National Health Authority (NHA) has expanded the coverage of Digital Health IDs under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), marking a major step towards creating a unified digital health ecosystem across India. The initiative aims to integrate hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies and diagnostic centres nationwide, enabling citizens to access their health records seamlessly and securely.
Each Digital Health ID acts as a unique identifier, linking an individual’s medical history, lab reports, prescriptions and treatment records. This allows healthcare providers to offer continuity of care, avoid duplication of tests, and make faster, informed clinical decisions. Citizens can access their records digitally, with control over who can view and share their personal health information, ensuring privacy and security.

The expansion of the system also strengthens the interoperability of healthcare data, a key objective of the ABDM. By standardising health records and enabling secure data exchange between public and private healthcare facilities, the mission is expected to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and support better health outcomes.
The NHA has emphasised the integration of hospitals, diagnostic labs, pharmacies and wellness centres into the ABDM ecosystem, enabling citizens to access digital health services conveniently. Mobile and web-based platforms allow patients to store, retrieve, and share their records, facilitating telemedicine consultations, insurance claims, and preventive health monitoring.
The initiative also supports research, planning and policy-making, as aggregated anonymised data can help monitor public health trends, disease outbreaks, and resource allocation.
Experts note that the expansion of Digital Health IDs is a significant step in India’s digital health journey, promoting transparency, accessibility, and patient-centric care. As more healthcare providers adopt the system, the ABDM is expected to enhance the efficiency, safety, and quality of healthcare delivery across the country
