Major boost to heavy-lift launch vehicles

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully conducted a critical test of its indigenously developed semi-cryogenic engine, marking a major milestone in India’s space technology capabilities. The engine is a key component for future heavy-lift launch vehicles and will significantly enhance India’s ability to undertake complex space missions, including human spaceflight.
The semi-cryogenic engine uses a combination of refined kerosene as fuel and liquid oxygen as oxidiser, offering higher thrust and improved efficiency compared to existing liquid propulsion systems. Its successful testing demonstrates ISRO’s progress in mastering advanced propulsion technologies required for launching heavier payloads into space.

According to ISRO, the engine will play a central role in the development of next-generation launch vehicles, including upgrades to the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) and future heavy-lift rockets. The enhanced thrust capability is expected to substantially increase payload capacity to low Earth orbit and beyond, supporting ambitious missions such as space station modules, deep-space exploration and large satellites.
The development also has direct relevance for India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. A more powerful and efficient engine improves mission reliability and safety while enabling greater flexibility in mission planning. It also reduces launch costs per kilogram by improving overall vehicle performance.
The successful test reflects years of indigenous research, design and testing, contributing to India’s goals of technological self-reliance and strategic autonomy in space. By reducing dependence on foreign propulsion technologies, the semi-cryogenic engine strengthens India’s position as a competitive and reliable spacefaring nation.
Experts have described the achievement as a significant step towards enhancing India’s commercial launch capabilities and supporting future scientific and exploratory missions. With this successful test, ISRO has moved closer to operationalising next-generation heavy-lift launch vehicles, reinforcing India’s growing role in global space exploration and satellite launch services.
