India’s Gravitational Wave Observatory Project Faces Delay

India’s proposed gravitational wave observatory project has encountered delays due to administrative and funding-related issues. The project, which aims to strengthen India’s capabilities in advanced space and astrophysics research, is part of global scientific efforts to study gravitational waves and major cosmic events.

The observatory is expected to be developed under the LIGO-India Project, with an estimated cost of around ₹1,600 crore. The facility will be built in collaboration with international partners and will contribute to the global network of gravitational wave detectors.

Gravitational waves—ripples in spacetime caused by massive cosmic events such as black hole mergers—were first detected in 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. The proposed Indian observatory will enhance the precision and coverage of this global detection network.

Experts note that the project is crucial for advancing research in Astrophysics and for strengthening international scientific collaboration. Once operational, the observatory will help Indian scientists contribute significantly to cutting-edge discoveries about the universe.
