Precision technology for strategic sectors

The Government of India has launched a dedicated National Mission on Quantum Sensors under the National Quantum Mission (NQM), marking a major step in advancing next-generation precision technologies for strategic and civilian applications. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s capabilities in quantum sensing, a field that leverages quantum properties such as superposition and entanglement to achieve ultra-high sensitivity and accuracy.
Quantum sensors are expected to play a transformative role in critical sectors including navigation, defence and security, healthcare diagnostics and geological exploration. In navigation, quantum-based inertial sensors and atomic clocks can enable highly accurate positioning and timing systems, reducing reliance on satellite-based navigation. This has significant implications for both civilian infrastructure and military operations.

In the defence domain, quantum sensors can enhance surveillance, submarine detection and threat monitoring by detecting minute changes in magnetic and gravitational fields. Such capabilities are particularly relevant for maritime security and border surveillance. The mission also seeks to support the development of indigenous quantum technologies, reducing dependence on foreign systems and strengthening strategic autonomy.
Healthcare is another key focus area, with quantum sensors offering breakthroughs in medical imaging, early disease detection and non-invasive diagnostics. High-precision sensing can improve the detection of biomarkers and enable more accurate monitoring of physiological signals. In the field of earth sciences, quantum sensors can assist in mineral and resource exploration, earthquake prediction and groundwater mapping by enabling detailed subsurface analysis.
The mission emphasises collaboration between academic institutions, research laboratories, startups and industry, aiming to translate laboratory research into deployable technologies. It also prioritises capacity-building, skilled manpower development and the creation of testbeds and fabrication facilities.
Aligned with the broader objectives of the National Quantum Mission, the initiative supports India’s long-term vision of becoming a global leader in quantum technologies. Experts view the launch as a strategic investment that will not only boost scientific innovation but also enhance national security, economic competitiveness and technological self-reliance in emerging high-impact sectors.
