Strengthening Indigenous Capabilities in Next-Generation Defence Technologies

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has made significant progress in the development of directed energy weapon (DEW) systems, particularly high-energy laser technologies for counter-drone and missile defence applications. This advancement places India among a select group of countries pursuing cutting-edge weapon systems designed to address emerging and asymmetric threats.
Directed energy weapons use focused electromagnetic energy—such as lasers or high-power microwaves—to neutralise targets at the speed of light. High-energy laser systems are especially effective against low-cost, high-frequency threats like drones, unmanned aerial swarms, and incoming projectiles. These systems offer advantages such as precision targeting, minimal collateral damage, and lower cost per engagement compared to conventional kinetic weapons.

DRDO’s research efforts have focused on laser generation, beam control, tracking accuracy, thermal management, and power systems, which are critical for operational deployment. Successful demonstrations indicate progress in engaging aerial targets over practical ranges, making these systems suitable for protecting military bases, critical infrastructure, and sensitive installations.
The development of DEWs is particularly relevant given the increasing use of drones and missile technologies by state and non-state actors. Directed energy systems can complement existing air defence networks by providing a layered and responsive defence capability. Their scalability and rapid response time make them well-suited for both peacetime security and high-intensity conflict scenarios.
The programme also aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives by promoting indigenous design, development, and manufacturing of advanced defence technologies. Spin-off benefits are expected in areas such as optics, electronics, power engineering, and materials science.
Significance
Advancements in directed energy weapon research enhance India’s national security preparedness against evolving threats. By strengthening indigenous defence capabilities, DRDO’s progress reduces import dependence and positions India at the forefront of next-generation military technology.
