79th anniversary of UNICEF’s establishment

11 December is observed globally as UNICEF Foundation Day, marking the establishment of the United Nations Children’s Fund in 1946 by the UN General Assembly. Originally created to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries devastated by World War II, UNICEF’s mandate has since expanded to become the world’s leading organisation dedicated to the protection, survival and development of children.
Today, UNICEF operates in over 190 countries and territories, working across critical areas such as child health and nutrition, immunisation, education, water and sanitation (WASH), child protection, gender equality and humanitarian assistance during emergencies and conflicts. It plays a central role in advancing child rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), to which India is a signatory.

India has been an active partner of UNICEF since 1949. UNICEF-supported programmes in India focus on improving maternal and child health, reducing malnutrition, promoting universal immunisation, enhancing learning outcomes, and protecting children from exploitation and abuse. Its collaboration with central and state governments strengthens policy design, service delivery and community-based interventions.

UNICEF Foundation Day reaffirms the global commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring equitable access to health, education and opportunities. India’s engagement with UNICEF directly supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to poverty reduction, health, education, gender equality and reduced inequalities, while reinforcing the principle that investing in children is foundational to long-term human development.
