Indonesia, in collaboration with the United States and partner countries, has initiated the yearly military drill “Super Garuda Shield 2025,” designed to strengthen regional security in light of increasing tensions in the Indo-Pacific

What is it?
An extensive multinational military drill held every year since 2009.

Concentrated on operational preparedness, collaboration in joint operations, and cooperation for regional security.
Inaugurated by:
Co-hosted by the Indonesian National Armed Forces along with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
Members/Participants (2025):
Main: Indonesia and the United States.
Extended to encompass: Australia, Japan, Singapore, the UK, France, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Brazil, and South Korea.
Characteristics:
Conducted in Jakarta and Sumatra, lasting for 11 days.
Encompasses joint combat exercises, interoperability training, and a shared live-fire drill.
Enhances collaboration in aerial, terrestrial, and naval activities.
Demonstrates concepts of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and collective deterrence.
Importance:
Strengthens regional security connections in an Indo-Pacific characterized by escalating China-U.S. competition.
Exhibits solidarity against pressure or aggressive alterations to the existing order (particularly in the South China Sea).
Represents a “network of partnerships” promoting Indo-Pacific stability.
