The Election Commission of India (ECI) will host the India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management in New Delhi from 21–23 January 2026, positioning India as an important global platform for discussions on democratic governance. The conference will bring together around 100 delegates from 42 Election Management Bodies (EMBs) worldwide to deliberate on the theme “Democracy for an Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable World.”
Objectives and Scope of the Conference:
The conference aims to facilitate the exchange of best practices and experiences related to free and fair elections, voter participation, electoral integrity, and institutional resilience. Sessions will focus on challenges such as misinformation, voter disengagement, electoral violence, and the use of technology in elections, including digital voter services and electronic voting systems.

India’s Electoral Experience as a Knowledge Resource:
India’s experience in managing the world’s largest democratic exercise, often under complex social, geographical, and logistical conditions, provides valuable lessons for other democracies. The ECI’s innovations in voter registration, inclusive polling practices, model code of conduct enforcement, and use of technology have earned international recognition. Hosting the conference allows India to share these institutional practices and learn from global counterparts.
Significance for Global Governance:
The event reinforces India’s role in democracy support and institution building, especially for emerging and developing democracies. Strengthening electoral institutions contributes to political stability, public trust, and sustainable development, making election management a core component of global governance dialogues.
Soft Power and Diplomatic Impact:
By convening election authorities from across the world, India enhances its soft power and democratic credentials. Such platforms complement India’s foreign policy emphasis on the Global South and multilateral engagement.
Challenges and Way Forward:
While sharing best practices, the conference also highlights evolving challenges to democracy, including digital manipulation and declining trust in institutions. Continuous innovation, transparency, and international cooperation are essential.
Conclusion:
The ECI-hosted conference underscores India’s commitment to democratic values at home and abroad. By fostering global dialogue on election management, India contributes to strengthening resilient and inclusive democratic institutions worldwide.
