Partnership deepens on AI, critical minerals, and economic security

India and Japan recently co‑chaired the 18th India–Japan Strategic Dialogue in New Delhi, further strengthening their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The dialogue focused on deepening cooperation across emerging technology, economic security, and resource sustainability, reflecting both countries’ commitment to a comprehensive and forward-looking partnership.
A key highlight of the dialogue was the launch of a dedicated AI dialogue, aimed at promoting collaboration in artificial intelligence research, innovation, and ethical frameworks. This initiative underscores the strategic importance both nations place on next-generation technologies, which are critical for digital transformation and competitiveness in the global economy.

Another major area of cooperation is economic security. India and Japan discussed measures to ensure resilient supply chains, secure critical infrastructure, and safeguard technology ecosystems, enhancing preparedness against emerging global challenges. The dialogue also emphasised collaboration on rare earth elements and critical minerals, which are essential for advanced technologies, renewable energy, and energy transition goals. Joint efforts in this domain aim to strengthen supply chain resilience and reduce dependence on single-source imports, ensuring strategic and technological autonomy for both countries.
The 18th Strategic Dialogue reinforces the broader bilateral cooperation framework, encompassing trade, investment, infrastructure development, and people-to-people links. It reflects a shared vision for a rules-based international order, technological advancement, and sustainable growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
By deepening partnerships in AI, critical minerals, and economic security, India and Japan are positioning themselves as strategic collaborators in technology, sustainability, and regional stability, highlighting the evolving nature of their bilateral ties in an era of rapid technological and geopolitical change.
