Decision allows credit transfer from international universities and approved online platforms, supporting flexible learning pathways and global academic mobility

The National Education Council has approved the expansion of the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) as part of reforms envisioned under the National Education Policy (NEP). The move aims to make higher education more flexible, learner-centric and globally aligned by enabling students to accumulate and transfer academic credits across institutions and learning modes.
Under the approved expansion, the Academic Bank of Credits will now include international universities and recognised online learning platforms. This allows students to earn credits from foreign institutions and approved digital courses, which can be accumulated, stored and redeemed towards degree or diploma programmes in India. The reform supports multiple entry and exit options, facilitating lifelong learning.

The expansion addresses the growing demand for flexible learning pathways and acknowledges the increasing role of online and cross-border education. It also aligns Indian higher education with global best practices, where credit portability and recognition of diverse learning experiences are well established.
For students, the move enhances academic mobility, reduces the risk of dropouts and enables customised learning trajectories. Institutions benefit from greater collaboration with global universities and EdTech platforms, fostering innovation and internationalisation in higher education.
Effective implementation will require robust quality assurance, clear credit equivalence norms and digital infrastructure to ensure credibility and seamless integration, helping India emerge as a global education hub.
