Induction of indigenous Dornier aircraft strengthens coastal security and EEZ monitoring

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has significantly enhanced its maritime surveillance and operational capabilities with the induction of two Dornier Do-228 maritime surveillance aircraft, further strengthening India’s coastal and offshore security architecture. The aircraft, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), feature over 75% indigenous content, underscoring India’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The newly inducted Dornier Do-228 platforms are equipped with advanced maritime surveillance systems, including modern sensors, radar, and communication equipment. These capabilities will enable the Coast Guard to carry out long-range maritime domain awareness, monitor suspicious activities at sea, and respond swiftly to emergencies across India’s vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Officials stated that the aircraft will play a critical role in search and rescue (SAR) operations, maritime pollution response, and surveillance against threats such as smuggling, illegal fishing, piracy, and infiltration. Their versatility allows operations in diverse conditions, including low-altitude flying over coastal and island regions, making them well-suited for India’s complex maritime geography.
The induction comes amid rising strategic competition in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), where maritime security, sea lane protection, and monitoring of non-traditional threats have gained renewed importance. Strengthening aerial surveillance enhances India’s ability to maintain situational awareness and protect its maritime interests, including trade routes and offshore resources.
The development also aligns with broader national initiatives such as Sagarmala, which focuses on port-led development and coastal infrastructure, and the governance of the Blue Economy, which seeks sustainable utilisation of marine resources. Effective surveillance and enforcement are essential to ensure safe navigation, environmental protection, and economic activity in coastal and offshore areas.
From an indigenisation perspective, the high domestic content in the Dornier aircraft reflects progress under initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence. It reduces dependence on imports while building domestic technological and manufacturing capabilities.
Overall, the induction of the Dornier Do-228 aircraft represents a strategic boost to the Indian Coast Guard’s operational readiness. By enhancing surveillance reach and response capacity, the move strengthens India’s maritime security framework and reinforces its role as a key stabilising force in the Indian Ocean Region.
