Railways continue modernisation with long-distance express services

The Indian Railways is expanding its long-distance connectivity with the introduction of two new Amrit Bharat Express services, scheduled to be inaugurated on 17 January 2026 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The new routes — Tambaram–Santragachi and Tiruchchirappalli–New Jalpaiguri — aim to enhance rail connectivity across multiple states along India’s eastern corridor.
The Amrit Bharat Express trains are designed to provide modern, comfortable, and energy-efficient long-distance travel, featuring improved passenger amenities, such as upgraded seating, bio-toilets, better catering, and digital information systems. These services also focus on reducing travel time while maintaining reliability, reflecting India’s ongoing efforts to modernise its rail network.

The expansion of these routes strengthens regional and inter-state connectivity, linking southern, eastern, and northeastern regions with major urban and economic centres. Improved access is expected to boost tourism, trade, and economic integration, while offering passengers a safer and more convenient travel experience.
These developments form part of a broader initiative by Indian Railways to modernise long-distance train services, complementing earlier initiatives like the Vande Bharat Express and Tejas Express. The Amrit Bharat Express is also aligned with the government’s infrastructure and mobility objectives, supporting the vision of efficient, inclusive, and technologically advanced transportation networks.
The new services are expected to benefit daily commuters, long-distance travellers, and regional economies, providing faster, reliable, and modern connectivity. By expanding the Amrit Bharat Express network, India demonstrates its commitment to upgrading passenger rail services, ensuring that modern, high-quality travel reaches a wider population while promoting regional development and national integration.
