South West Life Sciences Launched: A new initiative, South West Life Sciences, has been launched to spotlight and boost the South West’s burgeoning life sciences ecosystem. Spearheaded by the University of Bristol’s Translational Research Hub, the initiative unites eight partner organizations, each with expertise in discovery, development, investment, and innovation.
The partners include Bristol Health Partners, Bristol Trials Centre, GW4, Health Innovation West of England, Invest Bristol & Bath, Science Creates, South West and Wales Advanced Therapies Network, and the University of Bristol. They aim to extend their geographical reach by engaging with more regional organizations.

The South West is home to over 370 life sciences companies, employing approximately 20,000 people. The region's life sciences and technology ecosystem was valued at £8.1 billion in 2022, making it the UK’s third fastest-growing life sciences sector for employment. Significant advances include breakthroughs in gene therapy research and the launch of the UK’s most powerful supercomputer.

Despite these achievements, the South West still needs a regional advocacy body. South West Life Sciences seeks to fill this gap by fostering a cohesive local innovation ecosystem and acting as a catalyst for growth through strategic connections. The initiative aims to amplify the region’s voice on national and international stages.
The initiative, led by the Translational Research Hub, is funded by a Wellcome Translational Partnership Award to the University of Bristol. Professor Jeremy Tavaré, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Bristol highlighted its potential to drive new collaborations and advance life sciences.
Dr. Sarah George, Head of the Translational Research Hub, expressed excitement about working with more organizations to maximize the benefits of this initiative. The long-term goal is to develop South West Life Sciences into an independent organization providing expanded services and support for its partners.
The initiative’s new website, southwestlifesciences.com, showcases the region’s stories of innovation and collaboration and serves as a platform for future growth and investment. Explore Education Post News to keep an eye on events around the world.
