Islamabad’s Serena Hotel locked down as Pakistan hosts high-stakes US-Iran talks

Islamabad’s Serena Hotel Islamabad has been placed under government control as Pakistan prepares to host high-level talks between the United States and Iran aimed at stabilising the ongoing conflict.

Authorities have asked all guests to vacate the hotel, which has been requisitioned for several days to accommodate visiting delegations and officials linked to the negotiations. The move is part of extensive preparations underway in the Pakistani capital ahead of the talks.

While the Serena Hotel is expected to host members of the delegations, it is not confirmed to be the actual venue of the negotiations. However, its proximity to Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave and government offices makes it a key logistical hub for such high-profile engagements.

Security across Islamabad has been significantly tightened. Reports indicate that additional checkpoints have been set up, particularly around sensitive zones, including the so-called “red zone,” which houses key government buildings and foreign missions.

The government has also declared local holidays in the capital, a measure often used to reduce movement and ensure security during major diplomatic or political events. Educational institutions and offices have remained closed as part of these arrangements.

The talks come after Pakistan played a mediating role in facilitating a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran. The truce, which is limited in duration, has paused direct hostilities but has not resolved underlying tensions between the two sides.

Delegations from both countries are expected to arrive in Islamabad as part of efforts to move from a temporary ceasefire towards a more durable agreement. Senior US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, are expected to be involved in the negotiations, according to reports.

Pakistan’s role as host reflects its ongoing diplomatic engagement in the conflict, with Islamabad positioning itself as a neutral venue capable of facilitating dialogue between the two sides. The country has maintained communication with both Washington and Tehran during the escalation and subsequent ceasefire phase.

The Serena Hotel, known for hosting foreign dignitaries and international delegations, has previously been used for high-level meetings and diplomatic stays, making it a natural choice for accommodating officials during such negotiations.

The outcome of the talks remains uncertain, with both the US and Iran continuing to hold differing positions on key issues, including sanctions, regional security, and maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the ceasefire, officials have indicated that the situation remains fragile. The Islamabad talks are expected to focus on extending the truce and exploring a broader framework for de-escalation.

As preparations continue, Islamabad has effectively turned into a high-security diplomatic zone, reflecting the significance of the upcoming negotiations and the stakes involved in preventing further escalation in the region.
