Capital sealed, skies guarded as fragile ceasefire paves way for high-stakes diplomacy.

Islamabad has been transformed into a high-security fortress ahead of critical talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled to begin on April 11, as a fragile ceasefire in the Middle East raises cautious hopes for de-escalation.
The negotiations follow a two-week truce between Washington and Tehran, brokered after a sharp escalation in tensions triggered by the February 28 killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The ceasefire, facilitated through Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach, has opened a narrow window for dialogue between the long-time adversaries.

Security across Islamabad has been significantly tightened, with the city’s high-security Red Zone—home to Parliament, key government buildings, embassies, and luxury hotels—placed under near-total lockdown. Roads have been sealed off for civilian traffic, and only limited movement is being permitted.
Armed police and paramilitary personnel have set up multiple checkpoints, while traffic diversions have been implemented to ensure the smooth passage of official delegations. Authorities have also declared public holidays on April 9 and 10, effectively shutting schools, markets, and offices to minimize civilian presence.
Despite the elaborate preparations, uncertainty looms over the talks. Reports indicate that the Iranian delegation has yet to depart for Pakistan due to ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance and his team are already en route after departing from Hungary.
Pakistan has assured the United States of comprehensive security arrangements. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has promised “foolproof security” to the visiting delegation, even as a 30-member US advance team has reached Islamabad to assess on-ground preparations.
However, concerns persist. Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer has raised doubts about Pakistan’s ability to guarantee safety, citing broader security challenges.
Pakistan’s security measures go beyond ground arrangements. Reports suggest that the Pakistan Air Force has deployed IL-78 refueling tankers and C-130 aircraft to secure aerial routes for incoming delegations.
Fighter jets have reportedly been seen escorting Iranian aircraft near Bandar Abbas, while an AWACS surveillance system has been activated to create a protective aerial shield—aimed at deterring any potential threats during transit.
In a bid to facilitate the high-profile engagement, Pakistan has announced visa-on-arrival for all delegates, including journalists. Special facilitation counters have been set up at airports to streamline entry procedures.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the government has simplified protocols to ensure smooth participation in the talks.
As Pakistan steps into the role of mediator amid escalating regional tensions, the spotlight remains firmly on Islamabad—not just for hosting the negotiations, but for its ability to deliver a secure and effective diplomatic platform between two entrenched rivals.
