Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei says US message, delivered via Pakistan, is under review and criticizes Washington’s demands as excessive while stressing focus remains on ending the conflict.

Iran is reviewing a United States counter-proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Monday, signaling cautious engagement amid heightened regional tensions.
Speaking at a press briefing, Baghaei confirmed that the US message was conveyed through Pakistan and remains under assessment. He declined to disclose details, saying the proposal is still being examined.

“The issues raised are under review, and it is not appropriate to discuss them at this stage,” Baghaei said.
He described the negotiation process as challenging, criticizing Washington’s approach as involving “excessive and unreasonable demands,” which he said complicates efforts to evaluate the proposal.
Baghaei also dismissed reports suggesting that Tehran is negotiating over its nuclear program, calling such claims speculative. He stressed that Iran’s current focus is solely on halting the conflict.
“At this stage, we are not discussing anything beyond completely stopping the war,” he said, adding that decisions on future steps will be made later.
The diplomatic exchange, facilitated by Islamabad, comes as concerns grow over potential escalation in the region.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump struck a more optimistic tone, saying discussions with Iran were progressing positively. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said US representatives were engaged in “very positive discussions” with Tehran that could yield favorable outcomes.
“I am fully aware that my representatives are having very positive discussions with the country of Iran,” Trump said, adding the talks could lead to “something very positive for all.”
US special envoy Steve Witkoff also confirmed ongoing contact, telling CNN that Washington remains in communication with Tehran as both sides explore possibilities for ending the conflict.
However, Trump’s recent remarks contrast with his earlier criticism of Iran’s proposal, which he said was “not acceptable.” He indicated dissatisfaction with Tehran’s position, saying it had not met US expectations.
“I’ve studied everything — it’s not acceptable,” Trump said in separate remarks, adding that while Iran is seeking a deal, he remains unconvinced by its offer.
Iranian officials have maintained that their proposal is focused exclusively on ending the conflict and does not address nuclear issues. Baghaei said the plan, described as a 14-point initiative, aims to de-escalate tensions without linking talks to Tehran’s nuclear program.
He also rejected reports suggesting the proposal includes provisions related to mine-clearing in the Strait of Hormuz, calling such claims fabricated.
Reiterating Tehran’s stance, Baghaei said Iran would not engage in negotiations under pressure.
“Iran rejects negotiations under ultimatum or imposed deadlines,” he said.
