Deadly outbreak at sea: Hantavirus scare on cruise ship leaves three dead off Cape Verde

A suspected outbreak of hantavirus on board the cruise ship MV Hondius has left three people dead and several others ill as the vessel sailed in the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Verde.

According to the World Health Organization, at least one case of hantavirus has been laboratory confirmed, while several other infections are under investigation. Three of the affected passengers have died, and at least one person is in intensive care in South Africa.

The outbreak occurred during the ship’s journey from Argentina to Cape Verde. The vessel, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was carrying passengers on an expedition cruise when the illness was reported.

Health authorities said a total of around six people were affected, with symptoms ranging from severe respiratory illness to complications requiring hospitalisation. The WHO is coordinating with national authorities and the cruise operator to manage the situation, including medical evacuations and further testing.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially fatal disease typically transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. In some cases, it can lead to serious respiratory conditions or hemorrhagic fever.

The source of the infection on board the ship remains unclear, and investigations are underway to determine how the virus spread among passengers. The WHO has initiated epidemiological and laboratory studies to assess the risk and prevent further transmission.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about disease outbreaks on cruise ships, where close quarters and prolonged travel can increase the risk of infections spreading among passengers.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as the ship remains under medical scrutiny near Cape Verde.
