Marking his 90th birthday with humility and purpose, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama delivered a heartfelt message to the world, reiterating his lifelong commitment to compassion, religious harmony, and peace of mind.
“I am just a simple Buddhist monk,” he said in a message posted on X. “I don’t normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, since you are organizing events focused on my birthday, I wish to share some thoughts.”

Addressing followers a day ahead of the milestone, the Dalai Lama urged humanity to focus not just on material progress, but on nurturing the heart. “While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate — not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone,” he wrote.
The message resonated globally, as leaders, devotees, and well-wishers gathered in McLeodganj and beyond to honor the Nobel laureate, whose spiritual legacy continues to transcend borders and belief systems.
Despite his advanced age, the Dalai Lama assured his followers that his mission is far from over. “I will continue to focus on my commitments of promoting human values, religious harmony, drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom which explains the workings of mind and emotions, and Tibetan culture and heritage,” he said.
Reflecting on the spiritual foundations that guide his path, he quoted the revered 8th-century Indian philosopher Shantideva:
“As long as space endures, as long as sentient beings remain, until then, may I too remain to dispel the miseries of the world.”
In McLeodganj, birthday celebrations took the form of prayer ceremonies, youth forums, film screenings, and religious conferences. The central event, held at the Tsuglagkhang temple complex, was marked by prayers for his long life. The Dalai Lama expressed hope that he would live another 30 to 40 years to continue serving the world.
Among those attending the celebrations were cabinet ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and longtime supporter and Hollywood actor Richard Gere.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extending birthday wishes, described the Dalai Lama as “an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline.”
“I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness,” Modi posted on X. “His message has inspired respect and admiration across all faiths. We pray for his continued good health and long life.”
