Japan’s Ambassador to India and Bhutan, Keiichi Ono, has stirred a flavorful buzz online after sharing his love for Gujarati cuisine during a recent visit to the state. Taking to X, the diplomat posted a series of photographs indulging in an array of local delicacies — and revealed his clear favourite: panki.
“Gujarat has so many saras (wonderful) local delicacies, including Khandvi, Dhokla, Patra, Dahi Puri and Handvo,” wrote Ono in his post, which quickly drew admiration from Indian netizens. “My favourite is Panki, what about you?”

One image shows him sharing a plate of panki, a beloved Gujarati snack made by steaming spiced rice flour batter between banana leaves. Another shows him enjoying a full spread featuring the iconic savouries — dhokla, patra, dahi puri, handvo and khandvi. A delightful cross-cultural touch appeared when he was photographed eating khandvi — with chopsticks — alongside sushi.
His enthusiastic embrace of Indian cuisine didn’t go unnoticed. Social media erupted with praise for his openness and appreciation of regional food.
“Mr Ambassador is having a great time. I’m happy to see him relishing Indian delicacies,” one user commented. Another said, “Every time I see your post, it makes me realise how much you embrace the culture of my country.”
Recommendations also poured in. From suggesting iconic eateries like Mumbai’s Swati Snacks to expressing admiration for Japanese discipline and cultural respect, netizens were clearly moved by the ambassador’s gesture.
“Khandvi with chopsticks — adorable,” a user remarked, echoing the sentiment shared across timelines.
As diplomatic ties between India and Japan continue to deepen, Ono’s culinary adventure has added a flavorful chapter — one plate at a time.
