In a significant development for India’s aviation sector, Campbell Wilson has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, cutting short his five-year tenure that was set to run until 2027.

According to a report by Press Trust of India, Wilson, who took charge in July 2022, had already communicated his decision to resign to the airline’s board before formally stepping down. An official statement from the airline was still awaited at the time of reporting.

Wilson was appointed shortly after the Tata Group completed its landmark acquisition of Air India from the government in January 2022, marking the airline’s return to private ownership. His appointment came after Ilker Ayci opted out of the top role earlier that year amid controversy.

Sources indicate that the Tata Group had already initiated the process of identifying a successor earlier this year, signaling a planned leadership transition even before Wilson’s exit. The move now accelerates the search for new leadership at a time when the airline is undergoing an ambitious transformation.

The leadership churn extends beyond the parent airline. Air India Express, the carrier’s low-cost arm, has been without a chief since March 19 following the exit of its Managing Director Aloke Singh after completing his tenure.

Wilson’s tenure was also marked by turbulence. He faced criticism following the June 12 crash of a London-bound Air India flight shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, which resulted in the deaths of 241 of the 242 people on board the Boeing 787-8.

His departure now adds another layer of uncertainty to Air India’s ongoing overhaul, even as the Tata Group looks to stabilize leadership and steer the airline through a critical phase of restructuring and growth.
