Shreyas Iyer has been appointed India's new T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav in a move that signals the beginning of a new era for the national side.

The decision was taken recently following the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent Apex Council meeting, with selectors opting to look beyond immediate success and focus on building a long-term leadership group for the next cycle of international tournaments.

The move comes just months after Suryakumar led India to a successful defense of the T20 World Cup title in March 2026. However, concerns over his recent batting form and the team's long-term plans appear to have influenced the selectors' thinking.

It is the second consecutive year that India's selectors have made a high-profile captaincy change despite recent silverware. In 2025, Rohit Sharma was replaced as ODI captain by Shubman Gill shortly after leading India to the Champions Trophy title.

Shreyas is expected to begin his tenure during India's tour of Ireland, where the team will play two T20Is in Belfast on June 26 and June 28. The series will be followed by a five-match T20I tour of England from July 1 to July 11.

The squad for the upcoming assignments is expected to be announced on June 6, with selectors keen to usher in a younger leadership group as India begins preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The BCCI is also believed to be prioritising continuity ahead of future global events, including the continental competition where India will aim to defend the gold medal won in 2022.

Why Shreyas Iyer was chosen as captain

Shreyas's elevation is the reward for a sustained run of excellence as both a batter and a leader.

Over the past few years, he has established himself as one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and also led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals in 2020 and 2025 respectively.

Although he has not featured regularly in India's T20I side since December 2023 because of team combinations and competition for middle-order spots, his performances in domestic franchise cricket kept him firmly in contention.

His recent IPL numbers underlined his case:

• IPL 2025: 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07.
• IPL 2026: 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81.

While Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan were also considered for leadership roles, selectors ultimately favoured Shreyas because of his proven captaincy record and experience managing high-pressure situations.

India is expected to build its future T20 setup around him, with either Tilak or Ishan likely to be named vice-captain.

Why Suryakumar Yadav lost the captaincy

Suryakumar's removal may appear surprising given India's recent success, but it reflects the selectors' willingness to make tough decisions with an eye on the future.

Despite overseeing a successful T20 World Cup campaign, the 35-year-old's individual performances have declined in recent months, raising concerns about his role in India's plans leading up to 2028.

His returns during the last year were below the standards he had set for himself:

• T20 World Cup 2026: 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72.
• IPL 2026: 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

With India planning for the next Olympic cycle and future ICC tournaments, selectors appear to have concluded that an early transition would better serve the team's long-term objectives.

The appointment of Shreyas Iyer therefore represents more than a change in captaincy. It marks the start of a fresh chapter in India's T20 journey, with the management placing its faith in a younger leader to guide the team through the next phase of international cricket.
